Denver Zoo enclosed flare for biomass gasifier
SAS was tasked with designing a new, enclosed flare that could be safely and efficiently operated in close proximity to animal habitats and staff offices.
Using its considerable experience of flare design, SAS devised a unit that would work in conjunction with a biomass gasifier used to convert animal wastes to syngas, and a genset powered by the syngas to provide heat and electricity for the zoo.
The new flare was designed primarily to support the safe start-up and shut-down of the gasifier, but was also required for initial testing of the biopower facility.
Working closely with the zoo’s plant operators, SAS developed a custom-made flare design, featuring a unique “dual-fuel” burner to meet the special challenges of the zoo.
